Located in the San Luis Valley, Trinchera Ranch is managed to benefit wildlife and the natural environment. The ranch enhances the untouched beauty that local residents and tourists alike enjoy as they travel along Highway 160, over La Veta Pass and through the San Luis Valley.
Nearly half of the 172,000 acre ranch is protected by a land conservation easement held by Colorado Open Lands. The plan is to protect even more of the ranch in the future.
A lifelong conservationist, environmental philanthropist and outdoor sportsman, Louis Bacon views Trinchera as a keystone property in the protection of a vast corridor of spectacular public and private lands in the San Luis Valley and beyond. In fact, Trinchera Ranch is one of the few private properties in Colorado whose protection and preservation is a matter of statewide and national significance.
The ranch has been widely recognized for its commitment to conservation and was named the Colorado Association of Conservation Districts’ 2010 Ranch Conservationist of the Year.
Mr. Bacon’s commitment to protecting the land and important wildlife areas is abundantly clear with his approach to ranch management. Significant time and resources are invested in state-of-the-art forestry, habitat, wildlife and conservation practices. The ranch works closely with the Colorado Department of Wildlife on numerous initiatives, including the propagation of Bighorn sheep and Rio Grande Cutthroat trout. The Ranch also led the creation of Colorado’s wildly successful Ranching for Wildlife Program.
In addition to Trinchera, Mr. Bacon’s efforts have preserved and protected hundreds of thousands of acres of environmentally sensitive or significant land elsewhere in Colorado, New York and North Carolina.
